GUNONGAN
AND INDRA PATRA FORTRESS
I have always been amazed
to see “Gunongan” and “Indra Patra Fortress” as two incredible Acehnese past
heritages which not only turn out certain histories, but also show off their
unique uncommon parts. Although Gunongan and Indra Patra were established in
different time and somehow differ from each other, they are the same for some
considerations those make them fascinating.
There are many reasons why
Gunongan shares similarities with Indra Patra Fortress. As the starting, both
things are made as the historical buildings which become symbols of glory
period of Acehnese past kingdom. Gunongan was made during the famous
authorization of Sultan Iskandar Muda, the most well-known emperor of Aceh, to
please his lovely bride, Putroe Phang from Pahang. In similar thing, Indra
Patra Fortress was built during the glory kingdom of Lamuri, the first Hinduism
kingdom in Aceh. The second reason is from the basic materials of the building.
Both Gunongan and Indrapatra were made from natural substances such lime
concrete, clays, and stones. Furthermore, their locations are strategic in the
time they were built. Gunongan was built in the heart of Darussalam Kingdom and
Indra Patra was established right ahead of the seashore of Malacca Strain.
Despite their
similarities, in some parts of view, these building are distinct from each
other. First is considered from the wholeness of the buildings. Most of the
parts of Gunongan still become strong and complete. Compare to Indra Patra
which was almost destroyed because of Tsunami disaster and sadly to know that
many inhabitant took away some of its parts. Afterwards, the functions of both
buildings are different. On the one hand, Gunongan was made as a park for the
bride to play and as a place for her to relieve her feeling of homesick. On the
other hand, the Indra Patra Fortress was established as a defense if the
kingdom was going to be attacked. The last point is about the age of the
building. Gunongan was built around 1618, which now attains the age of 398
years. In contrast, Indrapatra was built in 7th centuries, which has
been existed for a hundred years.
To conclude, Gunongan and
Indra Patra may be distinct from the era they were built, the wholeness, and
the functions, but somehow, they also share many similarities in many aspects
like the symbol of the glory of Acehnese kingdom, basic materials of the
building, and strategic locations. For me, their differences and similarities
are the things those make these building as the spotlight of historical places
in Aceh and make me wonder about how great and incredible the cultures of
Acehnese people were, long before this time.
